Challenge Synopsis:
In order to achieve our goal of “zero-emission” and “zero-waste” vessels BC Ferries must reduce the overall energy required to operate the vessels. For this challenge, we are seeking technical solutions that will enable us to incrementally reduce the onboard energy requirements needed to safely operate the vessels. Some examples of onboard energy consumption come from:
- Lighting
- Water use/management, passenger amenities, catering, and galley equipment
- Heating and A/C
- Waste management
We are looking for solutions that will reduce the energy required to operate our vessels while still providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for our customers. Solutions to any and all of the above listed onboard requirements are needed. The above list is not exhaustive so if a solution is available for an onboard service that is not listed above we will welcome responses.
Context:
BC Ferries is entering the early planning stages to design and build ferries that will replace 6 of our existing ‘major’ class vessels. While the exact number of ferries to be built is still to be determined, these vessels will be some of the largest in our fleet, providing service between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island. BC Ferries is committed to building some of the greenest ferries in the world, striving for “zero-emission”, ”zero-waste” vessels.
BC Ferries are working with shipyards, naval architects, and alternative energy providers to determine the ideal size, structure and propulsion solution to achieve zero-emissions.
Response Criteria:
Solution providers may submit proposals for any one (or more) of the 4 listed energy and waste reductions areas above. Solution providers should provide the following information as part of their submission:
- Company history
- Testimonials
- Competitiveness
- Spare parts availability
- Service availability
- Energy reduction metrics
The Opportunity:
- If selected, potential to discuss your solution with one of the world’s largest ferry operators. If a solution is deemed suitable, there is also a potential to participate in a pilot project to test and optimize your technology for zero-emission vessel integration.
- Pitch your solution during GLOBE Forum 2022, North America’s longest-running sustainable business conference.
- Meet new customers and enter new markets with your service offering.
