Oil and Gas

Oil and Gas

The sector includes up-stream extraction, production, pipeline transportation, processing, refining and distribution of oil and gas products. The oil and gas sector is Canada’s largest industrial sector, contributing over 5% ($108 billion) to Canada’s GDP in 2018 . In 2019, the sector produced 4.7 million barrels of oil per day nationally . The sector is also Canada’s largest contributor of GHGs and the largest emitter of methane. The sector’s emissions are expected to continue to increase to 2030 with increased energy production from the oil sands as conventional extraction continues to drop. The emissions for the sector reached 193 Mt CO2e in 2018 and are expected to grow 3% to 199 Mt CO2e by 2030. Oil resources span provinces and reservoir types, ranging from heavy deposits such as oil sands to conventional crude production, which also vary in GHG emissions by production type.
